Following the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis, protests and even riots erupted across numerous cities, with Democrat politicians leading the call for the police to be reformed, defunded, and in some cases abolished.
The lack of support for police departments, coupled with lowered rates of prosecution and the decriminalization of certain crimes, has led to a steep increase in crime both violent and non-violent in places like Minneapolis, Oakland, and San Francisco.
According to records filed with the Federal Election Commission, and unearthed by the Washington Free Beacon, George Soros provided $1 million in funding to the Color of Change PAC, a “defund the police” group, on May 14.
The contribution is the largest political contribution that Soros has made to the 2021 election cycle and his first to that specific PAC since 2016.
In 2019, Soros’ Open Society Foundations provided the PAC with grants of more than $1 million.
According to the Free Beacon, the contribution from Soros, who remains one of the Democratic establishment’s most prolific donors, could further undermine the party’s efforts to distance itself from the “defund the police” movement, which has seen a drop in popularity following the rise in crime nationwide.
Democrats have attempted to downplay allegations that they support defunding police departments in recent weeks and months.
Indeed, as crime continues to surge, the Biden White House, through White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki, has accused Republicans of being responsible for defunding the police – a nonsensical claim that the liberal Washington Post gave “three Pinocchios” earlier this month.
Color of Change, a leading proponent in the “defund the police” movement, describes itself as the largest online racial justice group in the United States.
The group led an online outreach campaign in 2020 to defund police departments following the deaths of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor, as detailed by the Free Beacon.
The group created an online petition calling on would-be supporters to “Invest in Black communities. Defund the police.” It reads, in part (bold emphasis originally added by Color of Change):
The killings of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor and so many more at the hands of police violence have left us all outraged, but our movement is stronger than ever. In unprecedented steps, mayors across the country have made commitments to reassess how money is funneled to police departments. And the Minneapolis City Council recently approved a potential ballot measure that would change the city charter and dismantle the Minneapolis Police. Now it’s up to us to hold them accountable, push for further systemic changes, and not lose the momentum needed to change the institution of policing forever.
We know that policing doesn’t keep us safe, communities do. Policing doesn’t lead to thriving communities, investment does.
Communities are in desperate need of the things that keep us safe, housed and healthy, like investments in schools, jobs, affordable housing, parks, mental health services, community centers, and libraries. But time and again, police budgets are bloated at the expense of our safety.
We must begin to envision the society that functions for ALL of us and we must begin by divesting from and dismantling the systems that unjustly harm Black people.
As previously detailed, the movement has lost some of its traction following the spike in violent crime, but the organization remains committed to defunding the police despite the waning popularity of the trend.
Soros’ contribution has been the largest that Color of Change PAC received this year to date, with the second-largest contribution only coming in at $10,000 from Democrat Party donor Karla Jurvetson, as the Free Beacon reports.
In the last six months, the group raked in over $1.9 million in the six months before filing and spent $1.8 million of its funds.
Only around $291,000 went to administration and payroll and taxes, per FEC filings.
