(J. Edward Moreno) The number of coronavirus deaths in New York has passed 3,500, Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) announced at a daily briefing Saturday, an increase of 630 in one day.

Cuomo said 10,841 new coronavirus cases have been reported in the state since Friday, a record one-day jump, pushing the total number of cases to 113,704.
The state had reported more than 100,000 confirmed cases on Friday — nearly twice as many as it had the week before.
The governor said Saturday that the total number of people hospitalized is 15,905 but noted that two-thirds of all people who have been hospitalized have been discharged.
Cuomo said the state is “probably four to eight days” from a peak in coronavirus cases, an estimate that is much earlier than other governors have projected for their states.
“I’d like the apex to be tomorrow,” he said.
The governor signed an executive order allowing medical students who were set to graduate in the spring to begin practice earlier than typically allowed by state law. He also announced that the state will accept 1,000 ventilators from Chinese donors and another 140 from the state of Oregon.
The governor confirmed that the Javits Center, a convention center in Manhattan, is now receiving COVID-19 patients as hospital space grows scarce.
On Friday, Defense Secretary Mark Esper confirmed the Pentagon is looking at the possibility of treating coronavirus patients aboard the USNS Mercy docked in New York City.
“In some ways, I want to get to that apex, get to the other side of that apex and slide down that mountain,” the governor said Saturday. “On the other hand, we have to be ready for that fight and we have to handle that fight.”
Cuomo, who has gained national attention for his response to the virus, which has hit his state the hardest, pointed out that it’s been a month since New York reported its first case.
“It’s only been 30 days since our first case,” Cuomo said. “It feels like an entire lifetime.”
