(Stillness in the Storm Editor) The following is a fascinating discussion about sex and tantra and how our culture is very sex-centric, but often only on a physical level. But what if going without sex for a time could actually enrich our appreciation for this incredibly intimate aspect of life?
Speaking as someone who has studied the psychological aspects of many things, especially addiction, it seems that the way society currently conceives of sexuality—especially what pours out from the media—is heavily focused on just physical aspects, as if the highest pursuit in life is sex. In addition, sex and love are often confused or even completely divorced, but tantra is much more than just a lot of good sex. It is a holistic integration of our spiritual essence, one that is loving and transcendent, as well as physically stimulating.
In short, is there love… in sex these days?
Advertisers use sexually suggestive imagery everywhere, but of course, this is rarely admitted. As the saying goes sex sells. And second to hunger, sexual urges, whether romantically or otherwise can augment our motivations and behavior more than anything else. This primal aspect of our being is rarely contemplated beyond satisfying a general need. So perhaps going without for a time can be a good way to provide us contrast—this is what is discussed below.
The following is an honest unrestricted sharing by Katrina Bos that might cause you to become uncomfortable—because it is so unabashedly honest. But given how much our sexual nature is suppressed and then used against us, many of our “offensive reactions” to sex are probably due to social conditioning.
As always, discernment is advisable.
